Her maternal ancestors were German, and her dad was British. When still an child, her family moved from Hollywood to New Jersey but the family returned to Hollywood following her father's death when she was 11, where her mother was a film and tv wardrobe director. While Garr's dancing can be seen in nine Elvis Presley films, the 1968 movie Head (1968), starring The Monkees, became her first speaking role in motion pictures.
