Thelma Ritter performed in plays in high school and received training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She worked in radio in the 1940's. Her film career ended on 34th Street (1947) with a bit of a role in the 1946 Miracle. She'd played a weary Xmas shopper in the movie. Darryl F. Zanuck, who insisted on broadening her role, saw her success in the short scene.
