Tippi Hedren was born to Nathalie Kay Hedren, who ran a general store in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Dorothea Henrietta (Eckhardt), and Bernard Carl Hedren. Her father was Swedish and her mother was of German and Norwegian origin. Tippi worked as a fashion model in New York before she married her first husband, four-year-old Peter Griffith, in 1952 (married until 1961).She gave birth on 9 August 1957 to her only child, Melanie Griffith. Alfred Hitchcock, while watching a 1962 TV commercial on NBC's Today (1952), found Tippi, the cute cover-girl. He placed her on personal contract and threw her into The Birds (1963). Hitchcock lauded her in a cover story about the film in Look magazine (Dec. 4, 1962); he also told the Associated Press: "Tippi Hedren is absolutely exceptional.
