Thomas Henderson Docherty (born 24 April 1928) is a Scottish former football player and manager, usually known as "The Doc." Docherty played for many clubs, most notably for Preston North End, and between 1951 and 1959, he represented Scotland 25 times. Then, between 1961 and 1988, he managed a total of 13 clubs and the Scottish national team. Docherty was Manager of Manchester United from 1972 to 1977, during which time United was relegated to the Second Tier but promoted as Champions back to the First Tier at the first attempt
