The born and raised Anthony Marcus Shalhoub in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His father, Joseph Shalhoub, who owned a grocery chain, emigrated to the United States from Lebanon as an orphan at the age of ten, and later married Shalhoub's mother, Helen (Seroogy), who was born in Wisconsin, to Lebanese parents. He was introduced to the theater when Tony was six, in a school production of "The King and I" He graduated from Green Bay East High, then graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a Bachelor's degree in drama before going on to the Yale School of Drama, which he left with a Master's degree in Fine Arts.
