Tori Amos (born 22 August 1963 by Myra Ellen Amos) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is a singer with a classical background and a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Having already begun writing instrumental pieces on piano, Amos received a full scholarship at Johns Hopkins University at the age of five, the youngest person ever to have been accepted to the Peabody Institute. She was expelled for what Rolling Stone described as "musical insubordination" when she was 11. Until making her breakthrough as a solo artist in the early 1990s, Amos was the lead singer of the short-lived 80s rock group Y Kant Tori Read. Her music concentrate on a broad range of topics including race, feminism, politics and religion.
