Tupac was born in New York City, and grew up mainly in Harlem. In 1984, his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he and Jada Pinkett Smith became good friends. His family relocated to Oakland, California in 1988. His first musical breakthrough came as a member of Digital Underground group in 1991. He received individual recognition in the same year for his album "2Pacalypse Now," but this album also marked the beginning of his notoriety as a leading figure in hip-hop gangster permutation, with references to cop killing and sexual violence. His solo film career also began this year with Juice (1992), and co-starred in Poetic Justice (1993) with Janet Jackson in 1992.
