Virginie Ledoyen was born in Aubervilliers, outside Paris, to Virginie Fernandez on 15 November 1976. She was also making advertisements for tv at the age of 2,. At 9, she started to attend the École des Enfants du Spectacle and made her film debut in What Every Frenchwoman Wants (1986) at 10. She chose the name of the stage Ledoyen, which is the maiden name of her paternal grandmother. Her grandma was an actor on stage in France. Her paternal grandfather was of Spanish descent. For her appearance in Benoît Jacquot's A Single Girl (1995), she was nominated for Most Promising Young Actress at the César Awards 1996. The film Jeanne and the Right Man were both nominated for Best Actress at the Paris Film Festival.
