William Devane, the actor in film and television, was born in Albany, New York, the son of Joseph Devane, who acted as the chauffeur of Franklin D. Roosevelt while he was governor of New York. He appeared onstage after graduating from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. At last, he made his Broadway debut with Shirley Knight in "The Watering Spot," a flop that lasted but one run. (He was more successful during the 1970 season with "The Chinese and Dr. Fish," which lasted only three weeks.
