He first appeared on the screen as a child actor in movies including Going My Way (1944) and Bernadette's The Song (1943), before joining the military during the Korean War. There, he landed in the N.S.A. Protection Squadron 6907 with his fluency in five languages.He landed a contract with MGM while working towards his doctorate, and never looked back. Smith became one of the kings of B-movie villainy within the next thirty years.
