Zero Mostel was born on 28 February 1915 in Brooklyn, New York, to Samuel Joel Mostel, one of eight members of a Jewish Orthodox family. Raised in Manhattan's Lower East Side, the young Zero, known as Sammy, developed his passion for painting and drawing at Educational Partnership art classes, an organization that supports Jewish immigrants and their children. Sam Mostel studied in the City College of New York, and enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program at New York University after graduating from CCNY in 1935. After a year he left school and worked in odd positions before getting hired by the National Art Project of the Works Progress Administration to give lessons of drawing and painting at 92nd Street "Y,"
