David John Matthews (born 9 January 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, drummer, producer and record label owner from South Africa, best known as the Dave Matthews Band's lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist. Matthews was raised in Johannesburg, and as he grew up he often traveled between South Africa, the United Kingdom and the USA.At nine, Matthews began playing acoustic guitar. Between 1991 to 2003, Matthews concentrated primarily on songwriting and performing with the Dave Matthews Band which he started in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has also done numerous solo performances since then, and created several albums.
