David Alan Grier was born in Detroit, Michigan, to schoolteacher Aretas Ruth (Dudley), and physician and novelist William Henry Grier. He studied at Yale University in Shakespeare, where he was awarded an MFA from Yale School of Drama. Grier began his theatrical career as Jackie Robinson in "The First" on Broadway, for which he received a Tony nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Musical and the Theater World Award (1981). He then joined the Broadway cast of "Dreamgirls" and appeared in "A Soldier's Adventure" in front of Denzel Washington, for which both actors gave up their roles in the film adaptation A Sol
