Born in Niskayuna (county of Schenectady), New York, in 1983, Eric Thal attended Haverford Preparatory School in Haverford, Pennsylvania where he was President of the Student Council. He then moved on to attend Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania where he graduated from the engineering department. He left school with encouragement from his acting teacher Richard Bruer... Thal's film career started when he was cast by Sidney Lumet in Ariel's leading role in front of Melanie Griffith after hearing for a smaller role.The film, written by Robert J. Avarech, portrays a murder occurring in a hasidic community, with Thal playing the role of The Rebbe's son. He went on to play Alex Perkins, opposite Penelope Ann Miller, alongside Heather Graham and Will Smith in The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbagand the character Rick in the film Six Degrees of Separation.
