Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California to Naomi Foner (born Achs) and Stephen Gyllenhaal, producer / screenwriter. He is the brother of the actress Maggie Gyllenhaal who starred in Donnie Darko (2001) with his sister. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis is his godmother. His mother is from a Jewish background, and heritage of his father includes Swedish, English, and Swiss-German. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he made an impact in numerous films such as the period drama October Sky (1999), his breakthrough success, and as the title character in the psychological thriller Donnie Darko (2001), for which he was nominated for Best Actor with an Independent Spirit Award, portraying a mentally disturbed adolescent.
