James Brien Comey Jr. (born December 14, 1960) is an American lawyer who served from 2013 until his resignation in May 2017 as the 7th Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). For much of his adult life Comey had been a registered Republican; in 2016 he identified himself as unaffiliated. Comey was the U.S. attorney for New York's Southern District from January 2002 to December 2003, and the U.S. deputy attorney general under President George W. Bush's administration from December 2003 to August 2005. Comey left the U.S. in August 2005; Department of Justice (DOJ) and was Lockheed Martin's senior vice president as general counsel while still based in Bethesda, Maryland.
