Kevin Kline was born to Margaret and Robert Joseph Kline who owned a number of stores in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was of Jewish German origin, and his mother was of ancestral Irish descent. Kline taught at the Juilliard School in New York, having attended Indiana University in Bloomington. In 1972, Kline joined the New York Acting Firm run by John Houseman.Kline's performed Shakespeare around the country for this company. For his performance in the musicals "On the Twentieth Century" (1978), and "The Pirates of Penzance" (1981), Kline has won two Tony Awards on stage. Kline moved to Hollywood after appearing on the Tv soap Hunt for Tomorrow (1951), where his first movie was Sophie's Choice (1982).
