Shakir was a barber before he performed. While he was born in North Carolina, he grew up in Harlem and took part in the local reading at a theatre. He eventually joined numerous acting groups and in 2001 he entered The New School. Shakir took one of the leading roles in the short-term Quarry, making a visit to the Timeless.
