Nell Ruth Hardy was born in 1948 and lived there in Birmingham, Alabama, one of nine children born to Horace and Edna Hardy. She grew up listening to Dinah Washington and Elvis Presley's sounds and gained an early passion in singing that led to appearances on local radio and also on the gospel circuit with numerous music groups, with her church choir. Studying from 1970 to 1973 at the William Russell School of Drama, she made her Broadway debut in "Later" a two-act variety series that lasted two days and featured up-and-comers including Richard Gere, Peter Allen and Barry Bostwick. With "Dude" (1972), "Be Good to People Week" (1975), and "Don't Disturb Me, I Can't Cope" (1976), other musical parts come through.
