Paul Thomas Mann (6 June 1875-12 August 1955) was a German novelist, writer of short stories, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and laureate of the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature. His highly symbolic and satirical epic novels and novellas are known for their insight into artist and analytical psychology.He used modernized versions of German and Biblical myths as well as the theories of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer in his study and criticism of the European and German spirit. In his first book, Buddenbrooks, Mann was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and represented his father and his community.
