Val Kilmer was born in Los Angeles, California, to Gladys Swanette (Ekstadt) and Eugene Dorris Kilmer, who had been a real estate investor and manufacturer of aerospace equipment. Raised in Indiana, his mother was from a Swedish family and his father was from Texas. Val studied at the High School in Hollywood, then joined the acting school at Juilliard in his youth.His professional acting career started on stage, and he still takes part in theatre; he played Hamlet at the 1988 Shakespeare Festival in Colorado. His film debut in the 1984 Top Secret spoof! (1984), in which Nick Rivers appeared as blond rock hero. In the 1980s he appeared in a variety of movies including the 1986 hit Top Gun (1986).
