Through diligent work, charm and strong acting skills, Craggy-faced, consistent celebrity character actor Van Heflin has never yet made the Hollywood "A" list, but made up for what he lacks in appearance. He was born in December 1908 to Emmett Evan Heflin, in Oklahoma, son of Fanny Bleecker (Shippey) and dental surgeon Emmett Evan Heflin.As his parents divorced his brother and sister remained with his mother while in California he was farmed out to his grandmother. He had never been very happy and after graduation from college, his adventurous nature led him to head out on a tramp steamer.
