Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on 19 January 1946, one of the 12 children of Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer, and Avie Lee Parton (née Owens). Dolly grew up in Locust Ridge, Tennessee on a downstream farm. She appeared at the age of 12 on Knoxville TV and at 13, she recorded at the Grand Ole Opry on a small label. She graduated from high school in Tennessee County in 1964 to begin her career in the world of country singing in Nashville.
