Virgil Riley Runnels Jr. was born on October 12, 1945, in Austin, Texas, U.S. and died on June 11, 2015 (aged 69), in Orlando, Florida, U.S. Rhodes was a three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion.In the 1960s Rhodes started to wrestle and earned a reputation as a fast-talking, hard-rocking wrestler. He joined up with fellow Texan, the late Dick Murdoch, early in his career and they wrought havoc in on- and off-tag team appearances for more than 20 years. Rhodes, always a strong brawler with some "science" moves, finally captured his first heavyweight NWA World Championship by beating Harley Race in 1979.
