Patty Duke was born Anna Marie Duke to Frances Margaret (McMahon), a cashier, and John Patrick Duke, a cab driver and handyman, in Elmhurst, New York on December 14, 1946. She is of descent from the Irish, and an eighth from the German. Her acting career started when she was introduced to John and Ethel Ross, managers of her brother Ray Duke. Soon after this, the actress Anna Marie was Patty. Patty started off with advertisements, a handful of movies and a few bit bits. Her first major memorable role was in the Broadway version of "The Miracle Worker" when she was selected to play the blind and deaf Helen Keller.
