Avery Franklin Brooks was born into a musically talented family on 2 October 1948 in Evansville, Indiana. He was a tenor and graduated in 1901 from Tougaloo College in Mississippi from his mother's grandfather, Samuel Travis Crawford. The Delta Rhythm Boys Crawford visited the country in the 1930s.
