Laurence Harvey was a British screen star who helped usher his indelible image of a cynical social climber in the 1960s, and was one of the media stars of the decade with his roles in politically thematic screen images.Harvey was born on 1 October 1928 to Ella (Zotnickaita) and Ber Skikne at Zvi Mosheh Skikne in Joniskis, Lithuania. His ancestors were Jewish. He emigrated to South Africa with his family in 1934, becoming the youngest of three children, and settled in Johannesburg.During World War II the teenager joined the South African army, and was assigned to the entertainment unit. His unit served in Egypt and Italy, and the future Laurence Harvey returned to South Africa after the war and started an acting career.
