The son of Jean (Viscione) and Richard Dyer Strait was born in New York, New York, on 23 March 1986. His ancestry is half English and his descendants are half Italian. Steven and his family grew up in the village of Grenwich as a child. He attended Xavier High School and enrolled himself at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting to pursue his dream as an actor.
