Venus Ebony Starr Williams (born 17 June 1980) is a former American tennis player. A former world No. 1, Williams is widely credited with leading the women's professional tennis tour to a new age of dominance. The Women's Tennis Association has ranked Williams world No. 1 on three occasions, for a total of 11 weeks. On 25 February 2002, she first achieved the No. 1 ranking, the first African American woman to do so in the Open Era, and the second all-time behind Althea Gibson. Williams' seven Grand Slam singles wins are tied on the all-time list for 12th, and on the Open Era list for 8th, more than any current female player except her niece. She has reached 16 Grand Slam finals, most recently in 2017 at Wimbledon. She has also won the double titles of 14 Grand Slam Players, both with Serena Williams; the pair is undefeated in the double finals of Grand Slam.
